The electric mobility paradigm relies on lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are estimated to generate 9 million tons of RPA (Waste Batteries and Accumulators) per year by 2040.
However, most LIBs that become unfitted for mobility applications (capacity < 80% of original one) can be used in stationary systems for another 10 years. Measuring the State of Health (SoH) of End-Of-Life batteries is therefore critical to understanding whether, how long, and how well they can be used in second-life applications. Automation of this process would also speed up sorting and decrease costs.
The REBELION project aims to develop cutting-edge technologies with the goal of promoting a circular model for lithium-ion batteries used in electric mobility (both light mobility and electric cars), through industrial practices designed to maximize second-life applications and recycling.
To this end, it will be necessary to achieve the following technical objectives: 1) to study and develop a diagnostic method for batteries based on Electrochemical Noise Analysis, which allows them to be classified into different standard states; 2) to develop an automated testing and disassembly system for different battery formats; 3) to define a safety protocol for each stage of the value chain; 4) to develop a standardized battery labeling system that allows all stakeholders to automatically obtain the necessary data on second-life batteries.
The REBELION consortium covers all the value chain, including advanced robotic line and car manufacturer, which bring key knowledge and pilot validation facilities. The combination of 4 research centers and 7 industrial partners will ensure technology transfer from the lab to the industrial context.
