Technological innovation

INSPIREE

INSPIREE is a project funded by CINEA (the European Climate, Environment and Infrastructure Executive Agency) under the LIFE Programme.

The 42-months project aims to build Europe’s first industrial-scale plant for the recovery of Rare Earths from the NdFeB permanent magnets extracted from end-of-life hard disk drives and electric motors, thanks to the experience gained within the New-RE project (funded by EIT RawMaterials).

The consortium formed by Itelyum (the project coordinator), EIT RawMaterials, Erion, Glob Eco, and Università degli Studi dell’Aquila will develop a two-level process for the disassembly of permanent magnets (Level I) and the recovery of REEs oxalates by hydrometallurgy (Level II). Glob Eco’s Level I plant will have a capacity of 1,000 tons/year in terms of disassembling of electric rotors, while Itelyum’s Level II plant will have a capacity of 2,000 tons/year in terms of incoming permanent magnets, resulting in the recovery of about 700 tons/year of REEs oxalates.

The output materials, REEs oxides and carbonates, could be commercialized even before the end of the project.

Compared to the state of the art, INSPIREE will bring significant technical and environmental improvements, demonstrated by a specific LCA-LCC study.
